The Memory Keeper’s Daughter

Edwards, Kim. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. NY: Press, Viking, 2005. 401 pages. (Realistic Fiction)

The Memory Keeper’s Daughter is about a doctor named David Henry who must deliver his own children, twins, in a blizzard. One is a healthy son, but the other is a girl with Down’s syndrome. Fearing that the girl with Down ’s syndrome will too much of a hassle for his delicate wife, Norah, he hands off his new daughter to the attending nurse, Caroline Gill. Ignoring the doctor’s demands to send the child to an institution, Caroline harbors the child as her own.

Norah, Dr. Henry’s wife doesn’t catch on that her long hoped for daughter is alive, but in the hands of somebody else, but believes the lie told to her by her husband, that Phoebe, the name given her, is dead and her funeral is next week. Norah falls into a deep melancholia and attempts to overcome it by drinking and deceit all her married life.

To no one’s knowledge, Caroline appears at the funeral, before she heads for Cleveland, then Pittsburgh with Phoebe and her new husband, Al, who are happily married. The book tracks the lives of the separated twins, Paul and Phoebe, as they grow and learn.

Do they ever find their parents? Do they ever even meet? Read The Memory Keeper’s Daughter to find out!

I personally thought that this book was touching and sad. At times it needed to pick up the pace a bit, as it was going too slowly. The author captures the essence of past times and how life was for a small family by writing an ordinary day experience that one would experience in the ‘60’s in great spirit, and she went about it in an excellent way of telling it overall.

Cleopatra VII

Gregory, Kristiana. Cleopatra VII. New York: Scholastic Inc, 1999. 175 pages. (Historic Fiction)

This story takes place in mostly Egypt and Rome. The story starts out in her palace in Egypt, then when her father is being hunted by the town’s people and must run, Rome. The problems she faces are that she is next in line for the throne, her pet leopard is missing, the town’s people are also trying to kill her, her sisters keep taking the throne while Cleopatra and her drunk of a father are in hiding, she needs to make allies with Rome, and she can’t even trust her own slaves or sisters, (who are also trying to poison her). She solves all those problems by going into Egyptian towns and villages to see and hear what they say about her, then changing what she was doing to make it to their liking, while she is Rome, having all her slaves and most of her sister’s slaves look for her leopard, she runs away to Rome to hide from the villagers that are trying to kill her, her father sends his guards to go and send the sisters into exile, while she is in Rome, she speaks Latin and is very friendly and courteous to the Roman leaders, and she gets her own drinks and food so no one can poison her.

I selected this book by reading the back and it looked very interesting. It talks about her sister wanting to poison her. This author would make a great social studies teacher because she knows a lot about ancient Egyptians. In ten words I would describe this book as a book that had a lot of interesting Egyptian facts.

Papademetriou, Lisa. How To Be A Girly Girl In Just Ten Days. New York: Scholastic, 2007. 163 pages. (Fiction / Candy Apple Series)

The book I read was How to Be a Girly Girl in Just Ten Days. The main characters are Nick, Lindsay, Hannah, and Ben. The story takes place mostly in their school, but in a party too. Nick is a total tomboy who’s more interested in getting new basketball shoes then lip gloss and make up like the rest of the girls in her class. And after basketball practice one night “she gets invited to one of Hannah’s parties.” But that all changes, when she meets the new kid, Ben, because Ben is into the girly girls, like Hannah, Nick decides in order to get his attention she has to become a girly girl. To help her do is her best friend Lindsay, who also has a crush, but it’s a secret. The two of them go shopping first, and find nothing, so they go to the food court and have a snack; while they’re there they see Hannah. Hannah was not only the most popular girl through out the whole school, and the supper star on the basketball team, but also Nick’s and Lindsay’s worst enemy. So of course she had to come over and make fun of them some how. After that they finally found the perfect store. They got what they wanted and left. After a while of observing how Nick acts around guys, Lindsay decides to teach Nick how to talk to guys. In order to test her ability, Lindsay takes her to a reunion that her family is having. She does well till she sees Ben there. It went well till they all started dancing. By the time they got home Lindsay decides Nick is almost ready she just needs to use make up. They went to a little make up shop, and the owner Charlie was there and gave them ideas on what to put on and some free samples. Lindsay thinks she’s ready now.

I think the book was ok, but I would have picked some thing else if I had known really what the book was like. It wasn’t one of those books that you just can’t put down, but it wasn’t one that you would never pick up again.

No Talking

Clements, Andrew. No Talking. New York: Scholastic Inc., 2007. (Fiction)

Have you ever wondered what it was like to not talk for two days? In the book No Talking, a kid named Dave Packer was starting school as a 5th grader, and all he could do is talk. It got him in a lot of trouble at school. Linsey Burgess is the other main character who does nothing but talk, and is not well liked by teachers.

Dave and Lynsey were partners in class and he coughed to avoid talking during a presentation. This made Lynsey mad. Then at lunch, she was just running her mouth and all of a sudden, Dave whips around and starts yelling at her. He wanted to try a “no talking” contest because he had read about Ghandi. Dave learned that Ghandi didn’t talk once a week to “bring order to his mind.” For the contest, they agreed that the winner would write a big L on their forehead with permanent marker. They decided to make it boys against girls. So the contest was on! They made rules, which was that no one could talk more than three words at a time or the rest of the group would be counted against their team.

If you want the ending revealed, then you’ll have to read the book to find out and how the principal played the game they were playing.

I liked this book because it was an interesting book to keep reading. If I were Dave, I couldn’t keep my mouth closed for two days, and I wouldn’t want to lose a contest against girls. I wouldn’t have started the contest to begin with, and I wouldn’t have even spoken to Lynsey if she had something mean to say. This book was easy to understand because it took place in school, and I can relate to that because I spend most of my day there, too. This book could happen in real life, but the principal in the book was too strict.

I would recommend this book to kids that talk a lot so they can be quiet once in a while. Also, anyone who likes reading Andrew Clements would enjoy this book because it is fun and interesting to read just like any of his other novels.

The Elfstones of Shannara

Brooks, Terry. The Elfstones of Shannara. New York: Ballantine Books, 1982. 469 pages (Fantasy Series)

The elf tree the Ellcrys is dying and now the barrier holding thousands of demons are breaking out and soon will be unleashed on the world. Already the Reaper, most fearsome of the demons, is out searching for the chosen protectors and caretakers of the Ellcrys. Wil Ohmsford was given the elf stones, very powerful magic that can be call on when needed, given to him by his Grandfather Shea Ohmsford. Wil is now studying with Stors the most talented healers of the Four lands when the druid Allanon seeks him out to protect Amberle, outcast of the elfs and one of the chosen as she travels to Blood Fire to renew the strength of the Ellcrys. Can they make it there and back before all of the Demons are released and destroy all of the elves and the rest of the Four Lands? Read the Elf Stones to find out.

I have to say this is my favorite of the Terry Brook books so far and the second one I read. It was by far the most touching. I was crying by the end, and I don’t cry that easily. You'll love the characters and Terry Brooks really makes you feel their pain and happiness and sorrow. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever had a pulse. This is one of my favorite books of all time and I’ve read a lot of books.

Brin Ohmsford has the power of the wishsong. When Brin sings, she can control living things around her: flowers bloom and trees change season. Her brother can make illusions. Allanon, the druid and protector of the Four Lands, comes to seek out help as he did with her father and great-grandfather to help protect the Four lands from dark forces. This time Allanon seeks the help of the Ohmsfords because the evil book, The Ildatch, the same book the Warlock Lord used to turn into a wraith and his followers into the dreaded Skull Bearers in the time of the Druid Bremen. The Ildatch has turned meddlers of magic into the fierce Mord Wraiths. With Rone Leah and Allanon's help, Brin seeks out the Ildatch to destroy it. After his sister leaves on her quest, Jair Ohmsford is forced to leave his home by the Mord Wraiths and soon finds out through the legendary King of the Silver River that without his help Brin will die.

I thought this was gallant ending to The Sword of Shannara Series. I thought Terry Brooks did a rather good job with The Wishsongs of Shannara. It was well written and had a lot of very likeable characters that you were scared would die whenever they got into a battle. If you liked Lord of the Rings or Erogon, I would recommend this book.

The Scions of Shannara

Brooks, Terry. The Scions of Shannara. New York: Ballantine Books, 1990. 465 pages (Fantasy Series)

It has been 300 years since the last druid Allanon died . The entire race of the elves have disappeared. The dwarfs have been enslaved by the Federation along with all of the South Land and the Federation is hungry for the rest of the Four Lands. There are several people that can stand in the way of the Federation and the evil rumored Shadowen. The first is Par Ohmsford who has been gifted with the use of illusion magic like his ancestor Jair Ohmsford. Par has traveled too Varfleet with his brother Coll to tell the stories of their ancestors and the many times they helped save the Four Lands. The second hero is Wren, a distant cousin of Par, who was raised by the homeless Rovers and taught the skills to survive. The last is Walker Boh, Par’s uncle who lives carefully hidden with his moore cat in the East Land. Can these few heros stand against the dark magic and the Federation?
I thought the characters of the The Scions of Shannara where all very likable and the bad guys really got under your skin. I wouldn’t go as far to say it was Terry Brooks best book, but I still like it. If you have ever read anything by Terry Brooks, then I would  recommend the The Scions of Shannara if you like long fantasy books.

The First King of Shannara

Brooks, Terry. The First King of Shannara. New York: Ballantine Books, 1996. 489 pages (Fantasy Series)

The Druids of Pandora have devoted their lives to the protecting of the Four Lands ever since the creation of the Druid Council after the First War of the Races. They devoted themselves to the practice of old science from the old world . Only the outcast druid Bremen and a few trusted others still use magic. During Bremen's exile, he found that the warlock lord has acquired a fierce army of trolls and is prepared to invade the Four Lands starting with Pandora. The Druids must convince the dwarfs, elves, and humans to help them find a weapon sufficient to kill the Warlock Lord, but can they in time?

If you have read The Sword of Shannara, then you must read this prelude. It answered the majority of the questions I had when I read The Sword of Shannara. It taught you more of Allanon’s background. If you haven’t read the The Sword of Shannara, don’t worry you could read this before that or you could go read The Sword of Shannara and then read The First King of Shannara. If you like fantasy and you have some time to read a 500 page book, then I would recommend this book for you.

I just ended the book called The Inventions of Hugo Cabret. That book was a fantastic and I loved the pictures in it. I would just sit there for five to ten minutes just admiring all the great details the author put into them not to forget the time.

A young boy’s father worked at a clock shop so you can see why it’s called the Inventions of Hugo Cabret. But one day Hugo’s father went to a museum and found a mechanical man but it was broken. So they decided to fix it. Hugo’s father then made a book of drawings that would help tell how to fix it. But one day his father never came home, so Hugo was extremely anxious to find out where he was. Then all of the sudden the door burst open and it was his uncle and he said pack up your things and let’s go. Hugo then went to the train station where his uncle fixed all of the clocks and he taught Hugo how to fix the big clocks too. As you can see, his family is into the clocks and mechanical businesses and so fixing clocks is bound to be in his blood. Hugo’s uncle drank and wouldn’t come home till the street lights were on.

But one day Hugo was waiting for his uncle and he never came back that night. Hugo waited the next day, he didn’t come back then. But then Hugo meets a girl named Isabelle and they become best friends and they have some fights and situations they need to help each other out with. But if you want to find out what happens to Hugo’s father, uncle, and relationship with Isabelle, you’ll have to read this book to find out.

He wants to go back in time on game 3 of the World Series, which was the Chicago Cubs vs. the New York Yankees. They do this to win money off of bets with bookies, and autographed baseballs by Babe Ruth so Joe and his dad will be rich. With his dad he goes back in time to see if Babe Ruth called his shot. He tries to make a bet about what will happen during the game so he’ll have a lot of money when he comes back to present time. The book that I am reading for this reading log is about a girl, around 11 years old, who’s name is Flora Barnes, who is the main character. Her parents are divorced, and so she has to put up with a lot. At school she has problems too. Flora lives with her mom in London and get’s to see her dad on the weekends. Her dad Charlie lives on the upper part of his run down cafĂ©. Flora’s mom has a boyfriend named Steve, who has a son named Tim, but they all call him Tiger. Tiger is Flora’s little stepbrother, and he is very mischievous.

In the beginning of the book, Flora is celebrating her birthday, and after she was done opening all of her presents, her mom told her something she really didn’t want to hear. They were moving to Sydney, Australia! Flora’s stepfather was promoted to a manager of his job and they were sending him to Sydney, to get a similar job up and running well. Flora is worried about friends at school and not being able to see her dad. Her best friend Rhiannon is the most popular girl in her school and she is worried she won’t be able to see her, or that Rhiannon will get mad at her. She begged and pleaded her mom and everyone to stay, but her mom said no and that this would be a great experience for her. Flora had told her dad about the trip, and said they were going to be there for six months. She did not want to go to Australia, she wanted to stay with her dad at his cafĂ©, but at the same time she wanted to go with her mom. She thought that her dad would be lonely so she decided to stay with him. Then the day came, after crying and talking about things, Flora still wanted to stay in London.

As she watched her mom, Steve and Tiger drive off she wondered if she made the right decision.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it relates a lot to me. I used to cry myself to sleep sometimes during my parents divorce, I have to wonder if I made the right decision sometimes, and I have to get used to it, which after all isn’t too bad. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone! It is a funny, sometimes sad, but it is a very good book and I loved it!

The book I read is a Diary of a Young Girl written by Anne Frank . She was a Jewish girl alive during the holocaust. What a coincidence that she started to write her diary right when the holocaust started. In the book she tells about a boy that she meets by him asking her if he could walk her to The way the find this diary after she died was her dad was visiting the place where they were hiding and he stumbles upon her writing and finds out that she was keeping a diary.

It’s really great because she tells her opinion on everything to the diary, (also known as kitty). She treats it like it’s her best friend, and she’s not afraid to right anything in it. In the beginning things are kind of slow but then all of a sudden there running from home so they don’t get put in the concentration camps. Probably my favorite thing about this book is that everything that she’s talking about is really happened, word for word. It keeps you locked into the book because she waits one or two days and then writes what has happened and in the middle of the book a lot of things are going on.

In the dead of night, as the shops of Venice stand idly by and the winged lions and mythical creatures awake, the Thief Lord cuts through the night like a dagger, his prizes in hand. Or so Prosper and Bo thought. Prosper, age twelve, and Boniface, age six, recently had there mother taken away from them by Death. They had heard countless stories of Venice, the winged lions that guard the rooftops, the water creatures that walk up the stone steps of the canals, and the roads made of water. When they run away from their wicked Aunt Esther, they hop on a train to Venice. Prosper and Bo didn’t know where to go until Riccio, Hornet, Mosca, and the Thief Lord take him in and give them a home. All is well in their abandoned movie theatre, until the Thief lord accepts a job offer from the count to steal a lion’s wing from Ida Spavento that goes to the magical merry-go-round of the Merciful Sisters…

This book has a wonderful setting and can paint vivid images in your mind with only a few of the authors words. I would recommend this book to another person because it was very thrilling to me and kept me on the edge of my seat. I am rating this book a seven out of ten. I also learned many Italian words from The Thief Lord.

Well, in this book a girl named Maggie lives with her grandmother because when she was young her parents died. Her grandmother owns a vet clinic that is attached to their house so it is very easy for her to get to work if there is an emergency. Maggie helps out a lot in the clinic but since she has been spending so much time in there. She has not been doing her homework or studying for tests so her grandma banned her from the clinic until her grades come up. While Maggie is banned from the clinic, Maggie’s grandma needs help in the clinic. Luckily, a girl in Maggie’s class just signed up for volunteer work. Will they find the puppy mill?

I found this book because it is by my most favorite author. I looked where all the other books by her were and there it was. I recommend this book to everyone. No matter if they like or dislike animals because it talks about a lot more then that. It also is as if you are a character in the book. A Northern Light

Donnelly, Jennifer. A Northern Light. Orlando: Harcourt Books, 2003. 380 pages. (Historic Fiction / Mystery)

A Northern Light is based on a true story about a chilling murder of a young woman named Grace Brown from Cortland, New York in 1906.

Mattie Gokey lives on a farm with three sisters, her father, and their animals. Her mother died several years ago of cancer. Mattie has dreams of going to New York City to become a writer, but she is sure that will never happen considering she doesn’t have any money to spend and her family needs her help around their farm. When Mattie’s family is in desperate need of money, Mattie takes a job at the Glenmore hotel. One day one of their guests, a woman by the name of Grace Brown, pleads Mattie to burn a bundle of letters, Mattie promises but doesn’t get the chance to right away. That afternoon Grace’s dead body is found in the lake. Everyone suspects she and her lover accidentally capsized the boat and both drowned, but when Mattie breaks her promise to burn the letters and reads them, she discovers what really happened that day on the lake.

This is an extremely chilling story that you will find yourself reading well into the night. The chapters switch between the present and past and in the beginning, the “past” chapters are a little dull. Towards the second half though, every sentence grabs your attention and makes you want to keep reading.

Beowulf a New Telling

Nye, Robert. Beowulf a New Telling. New York N.Y.: Bantam Doubleday Dell Books for Younger Readers, 1968. 103 pages (Epic)

Beowulf is an amazing story about a man named Beowulf who dares to stand up to one of Cain’s three children Grendel. Beowulf has an amazing characteristic of finding his weakness and turning them into strengths: he has very poor vision but he sees it as a gift because he can see the world differently than other men; he sees the things men don’t even notice. Grendel has begun to raid the golden hall of Heorot at night ever since the hall was finished. Many men have tried to kill Grendel but all have failed. Beowulf does not seem worried about killing Grendel; he doesn't even bring his sword to fight him. Hrothgar the king of the Danes and his wife Wealhtheow are worried for Beowulf’s safety but they know that if any man can kill Grendel it is Beowulf.

I thought this was a superb retelling of Beowulf. I want to go out and read the direct translation now. I think anyone who wants to read a short epic tale should read this. It’s a quick read and I loved it and that’s coming from a guy who reads 400-600 page books. I think anyone could love this story.

The book Middle School the Worst years of my life is an excellent book that is great for the readers from 11-13. It was a great read that I could not put down. The book has to do with breaking rules, family troubles, and an “imaginary” friend that gives him ideas along the way.

Rafe Katchadorion is a middle school boy who doesn’t want his next year in middle school to be boring and just breeze through it. The main characters are Rafe Katchadorion, his imaginary friend Leo, Rafe’s mom, and Rafe’s mom’s boyfriend bear.

The main idea of the story is Rafe’s makes a game so his first year of middle school isn’t boring and just drag on. The game is to make school interesting by breaking the rules. Rafe has to get a total of 1,000,000 points by the end of the school year. There is only one rule in this game is to not get anyone else hurt.

Her mom thinks it is a good idea for Ronnie and her younger brother to spend the whole summer vacation with their father in North Carolina. Ronnie’s father, a former concert pianist, is living a nice, quiet life in a beach house and making an art masterpiece for the local church. Ronnie, the rebellious person she is, rejects all of her father’s attempts to become closer and meets a boy, Will Blakelee, the last person she ever thought she would be attracted to. As time goes on, Ronnie falls in love with Will and realizes he is not the boy she first thought he was when they had a little run-in at the beach on Ronnie’s first day there. Ronnie has many decisions to make about her future with college and her true love and her dad. But at the same time, Will has decisions too. Will the two of them blow off college and stay in North Carolina together? Will Ronnie go back home to New York? Will Ronnie and Will both go off to college? Will she get the relationship back with her father that she secretly kind of misses? Before the summer is over, Ronnie feels so much guilt and regret to her dad that she secretly finishes writing their song…………….The Last Song.

I would recommend this book to other people. I would because it is an amazing love story and every chapter somebody has a new challenge to face, so it never gets boring. I am not much of a reader but I could not put this book down. I love how in just a month or two a person can just change their whole attitude about life, one day at a time and even though Ronnie has some really hard choices to make, any reader would have done most of the same things. Ronnie is just like one of my best friends. Her parents got a divorce about a year ago and after it was official she was so angry and rebellious. She won’t listen to anyone and she hasn’t even said a single word to her father since he moved out, just like Ronnie. The Last Song is an amazing book and I hope you read it

The story starts in the poorest of the twelve districts in the poorest part, The Seam. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen hunts illegally to support a family because of her father’s death. On reaping day Katniss and her little sister Primrose are entered in.

Effie Trinket picks the women first. “The girl tribute is Primrose Everdeen” she calls out. Katniss can’t believe it! “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute,” she calls out. Then baker's son Peeta Mellark is called and off they go on the train to the capitol for preparation for the arena where the twenty-four tributes fight to the death.

Who will win???? May the odds be ever in your favor.

Personally my favorite charter was the district eleven male tribute Thresh. I didn’t care for either of the district two tributes. I love this book I recommend it to anyone who likes to compare books and movies and who loves a great violent read.

The Hunger Games is a book about survival and courage. It takes place in a country called Panem which has 12 districts. Once a year, a boy and a girl from each district are selected to fight each other in the Hunger Games. The survivor of the games wins food for their district for a year. Katniss, a teenage girl from District 12 chooses to fight in the Hunger Games. The boy tribute from District 12, Peeta, becomes good friends with Katniss. Based on the rules of the Hunger Games, they may need to kill each other in order to win the games. The dilemma that these 24 children faced was that in order to win the Hunger Games, they had to kill the other 23 kids.

It is a great book because it reminds the reader that we are in a great country and that you don’t have to worry about being chosen to play in the Hunger Games and risk being killed. The author Suzanne Collins, did a great job writing this book and ending each chapter with a feeling of suspense that made me want to read the next chapter. I read this book in my English class and really enjoyed it. The Hunger Games is the first book in a 3 book series. There is also a movie made based on this novel which I look forward to watching.
