Speak

Anderson, Laurie. Speak. New York City: Penguin Group, 1999. 198 pages. (Fiction)

It happened in A, at an end of the summer senior party. Melinda and her friends were going into ninth grade. Melinda was drunk. She went outside and came back a different person. Nobody knows but her and him...
Now Melinda is in ninth grade. She has no friends, and almost everyone hates her. Her grades have dropped from straight Bs to Fs. She’s is letting the past tear apart her future. Is there a way back?

This book was so deep and emotional, and written so well I actually felt like what had happened in the book had happened to me. I was kind of shaken up (I know that probably sounds weird). Believe me when I say that LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON IS AN INCREDIBLE WRITER!!!!!!!!!!! If you don’t read this book, you will have missed out on a truly amazing book!

Sabriel

Nix, Garth. Sabriel. Australia: HarperCollins Publishers, 1995. 491 pages. (Fantasy)

Sabriel is a girl with an unusual father: he puts the dead to rest. One day when Sabriel is almost ready to graduate from school at the early age of sixteen, she gets a shadow messenger from her father. It goes to death and she follows it. It gives her the tools that her father used, seven magical bells and a magical sword. Sabriel realizes that he is either trapped in death or is dead. Whichever one, she sets off hoping to save him. When she crosses The Wall into the Old Kingdom, she experiences many difficulties. She also finds out that her father was an Abhorsen, and that she must now take on his responsibilities, like banishing zombie-like creatures. Convinced that when she resurrects her father, she will be free of these new obligations, she sets out to find him. She comes across a mysterious cat that has been advising Abhorsens for a lengthy amount of time. Another one of these strange discoveries is Touchstone, a young man that was frozen in time for two hundred years with a secret as to how he got there which might be the key to defeating the enemy that Abhorsens have fought for centuries. But, will Sabriel find her father in time to stop it?

This book was really excellent. I liked that Sabriel was so determined to relieve herself of her duties and to get her father back, but she was forced to eventually face what she must do. For almost the whole story, she tries to get rid of her responsibilities, but when she is told that she must step up, she does and realizes that it’s not really as horrible as she was making it out to be. I’m looking for the next in the trilogy, Lirael. It’s going to need to work hard to be as good as Sabriel.

Jane Doe goes through a terrible explosion, and she’s only bruised, but she loses her memory and is sent to a cell with other kids until her parents come for her. She meets her new best friend Daniel, who teaches her how to pick locks, and helps her through tough times of rage, terrible dreams, and flash backs. But then, her mother comes and calls her Alexa Collins. Jane looks through the memories of Alexa and finds herself feeling completely different than the Alexa she was known by. She was used to a tough life from the memories she gathered. But, she takes the role of Alexa pretending that she is like the girly girl Alexa is. She sees the man who terrorizes her dreams as a family doctor. More and more she unravels the truth about Doctor Sytron and his evil plotting against her. Will she live or will she end up giving in to the lies that he injects into her?

I extremely loved this book. The action that goes along with her symptoms as all of her memories start coming back into place, memories that aren’t of hers but of the fake Alexa Collins, was all good. I never wanted to put the book down because it was awesome because of the descriptions. I’m sure you’ll feel the same way as me when you start reading.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw

Kinney, Jeff. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw. NY: Amulet Books, 2009. 224 pages. (Graphic Novel / Humor)

The third book in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Greg Heffley is back for more mayhem and insanity. Greg goes through his daily life with the new fear that his father will ship him off to military school. The things he experiences in the book are different, strange, and embarrassing, from his dad signing him up for soccer to becoming a boy scout. As always Greg is having problems with his family, school, and life in general. It appears to him that life is being taken to the wrong turn, which makes this a very interesting book to read.

This was a fun, quick, and easy read for me. The text and dialogue made me think a 6th grader wrote the book because it was kid-like. The only problem I can see with it, was that it’s really good but too short. I plan to buy the fourth book if Jeff Kinney decides to write another. I would recommend it to people who need a quick read or funny book.

High School Musical, Under the Stars

Perelman, Helen. High School Musical, Under the Stars. New York: Disney, 2008. 246 pages.

I read High School Musical, Under the Stars and thought it was an interesting book. There are 9 main characters, Gabriella, Troy, Kelsi, Martha, Sharpy, Ryan Chad Zeke, and Taylor. They all went on a school field trip to a campground for the weekend. The first day they were there, they all went on a scavenger hunt in the woods. There was a green and blue group. Sharpy went with Troy and Martha in the green group. While Gabriella went with Taylor, Ryan, Kelsi, Zeke, and Chad in the blue group. Both groups went in the woods but the blue group went on an expert trail. Ryan and Taylor found a rabbit that was on the scavenger list while they were walking. When they went to go back with the group no one was there. They were worried because they were lost. Will Taylor and Ryan get back to camp or will they never be seen again?

I thought this book was very interesting. Once I got to when Taylor and Ryan were lost, I couldn’t put the book down. I really wanted to find out if they were ever seen again or not. If there was a sequel to this book I would read it.

The Giggler Treatment

Doyle, Roddy. The Giggler Treatment. N.Y: Scholastic, 2000. 112 pages. (Humor/Fantasy)

Follow along with us as we go through a difficult time in a small town in Ireland with the Gigglers, Mr. Mack and his family.

The Giggler Treatment is about the Gigglers and what they do to adults. They give adults the Giggler Treatment by putting dog droppings in the path of an adult who has mistreated a child or has sent them to bed early or has not dinner. That very thing happened to Mr. Mack; is a biscuit taste tester (in Ireland a biscuit is a cookie). The night before he sent his two boys Robbie and Jimmy up to their room because they broke the window that Mr. Mack had just fixed! So the Gigglers almost gave Mr. Mack the “Giggler Treatment” but when his foot is about one inch from the poo his pet dog Rover and his baby girl Kayla who can’t talk yet, saved the day! Now, the Gigglers know that they should get the full story before they go and drop some more poo on the ground for someone to step in.

I liked the book because it was funny and sometimes my parents send me to bed early or let me go to bed without dinner. I wish that sometimes the Gigglers were real, and that I could save the day. Sadly we all know that super heroes aren’t real, or are they? So, catch up with Mr. Mack Kayla, Rover, and the rest of the gang when you read the book The Giggler Treatment.

The Secret Circle-The Initiation and The Captive

Smith, Lisa J. The Secret Circle-The Initiation and The Captive. New York: Harper Collins, 1992. 396 pages. (Mystery / Suspense)

I read a book, The Secret Circle, about a fourteen year old girl, Cassie. It took place in New Salem, Massachusetts where Cassie and her mother moved to take care of Cassie’s grandmother. Cassie’s grandmother lived on Crowhaven Road, a road with only twelve other houses on it far away from town. After Cassie’s first day of school, she wanted to go home, back to California to be with all her friends. Within the next few days, she found out about a group of girls and boys who the rest of the school seems to be afraid of their strange looks and behavior. The groups name is the Circle it’s a secret to anyone who isn’t a part of it. One of the girls, Diana, befriended Cassie and helped her meet other people. After the death of Kori, a soon-to-be member of the group, Cassie got initiated instead. This story takes you through all the events that Cassie experiences after moving.

I liked this book because it’s super exciting and kept you interested, there is many mysteries that you find out as you read. My least favorite character in the story is Faye because she forces Cassie into bad situations, such as making Cassie steal. I would recommend this book to anyone because it’s a story that links to real people lives, like when Cassie moves and has to make new friends. Even though it’s fiction, it has real situations that many kids who start going to a new school may face.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Kinney, Jeff. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. NY: Amulet Books, 2007. 217 pages. (Graphic Novel / Humor)

I just read Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and it makes a lot more sense now because the first book I read was the second not the first book. The main character is Greg Heffley and deals with all his problems at school. The story mostly takes place at his house and school. The main problem Greg faces is beginning middle school and putting up with bullies and teachers. He ends up getting through it with his best friend Rowley at his side because when you do something with your best friends, they help you a lot through problems and situations. In Diary of a wimpy there are several events and activities that occurred in his school like one is a school play. Greg’s mom made him try out for the play which was a bit weird because some parts weren’t even in the movie. He made it as a tree, but only because so many people wanted to try out and the director said everyone would get a part, so she had to start making up parts. Another event that occurred was that Greg and his best friend went trick or treating and boy was that a funny story but you’ll have to read to find out about that one. One more event was there was this cheese and it was very moldy and if you were to touch it you would what is called the cheese touch and no one would get near you. The To find out how Greg gets rid of it, you have to read it.

I think I’m like Greg because my friends are weird too, and my mom is always telling me to try new things, which is not bad, but can get very annoying. I really did enjoy this book because it was very funny and I want to keep reading this series and can’t wait to read the next novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Last Straw, or at least that’s what I think its called. I really enjoyed this book because it was funny and very entertaining. My favorite part was when Halloween came it was the best and the most funny part. I would recommend this book to anyone who would love a couple of good laughs and a fun time reading a great book.

Tolkien, J.R.R. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. NY: First Ballantine, 1965. 527 pages. (Fantasy)

There are many characters in this book like the other books made by JRR Tolkien. One of the main characters is Frodo, the Ring Bearer. He was given the ring by Bilbo and is appointed the job of bringing the ring to the fiery depths of Mount Doom in the land of Mordor. The Nine Black Riders also share a big part in this story as wraiths of the ring. Once mortal men, they were given nine rings of power by the dark lord Sauron. Blinded by their greed and lust for power, they fell into darkness and are now his most deadly servants. Aragorn, a ranger of the North, is also one of the most important characters of the story. He is the son of Arathorn and heir to Isilidur and is the true king of Gondor. The journey takes place in the battle-hardened lands of Middle Earth where Frodo has to journey to Mordor and throw the ring into the fire. The characters set out in a Fellowship of nine to complete the quest. Join Gandalf the Grey; Aragorn; Legolas; Gimili son of Gloin; Boromir Captain of Gondor; Frodo the ring bearer; Sam Wise Gamgee, Frodo’s gardener; Peregrin Took; and Meridoc Brandybuck on their journey to Mordor. An interesting event is the Battle on Weathertop where Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Aragorn are surrounded in the ruins by five of the the Nine Black Riders. Frodo puts on the ring to try to escape, but sees the wraith’s true form. The captain of the nine draws his Morgul blade, a poisoned blade, and stabs Frodo with it. The scene that had the greatest impact on me is when Gandalf battles with a Balrog on the bridge of Khazad-Dum where a Balrog of Morgoth battles Gandalf. Gandalf is all alone fighting this demon from the deepest pits of Moria. I liked the book a lot because of the intense scenes and the mythical characters. I would recommend this book to everyone who likes fantasy.
