The Secret Circle-The Initiation and The Captive

Smith, Lisa J. The Secret Circle-The Initiation and The Captive. New York: Harper Collins, 1992. 396 pages. (Mystery / Suspense)

I read a book, The Secret Circle, about a fourteen year old girl, Cassie. It took place in New Salem, Massachusetts where Cassie and her mother moved to take care of Cassie’s grandmother. Cassie’s grandmother lived on Crowhaven Road, a road with only twelve other houses on it far away from town. After Cassie’s first day of school, she wanted to go home, back to California to be with all her friends. Within the next few days, she found out about a group of girls and boys who the rest of the school seems to be afraid of their strange looks and behavior. The groups name is the Circle it’s a secret to anyone who isn’t a part of it. One of the girls, Diana, befriended Cassie and helped her meet other people. After the death of Kori, a soon-to-be member of the group, Cassie got initiated instead. This story takes you through all the events that Cassie experiences after moving.

I liked this book because it’s super exciting and kept you interested, there is many mysteries that you find out as you read. My least favorite character in the story is Faye because she forces Cassie into bad situations, such as making Cassie steal. I would recommend this book to anyone because it’s a story that links to real people lives, like when Cassie moves and has to make new friends. Even though it’s fiction, it has real situations that many kids who start going to a new school may face.
