Artemis Fowl.

Colfer, Eoin. Artemis Fowl. New York: Scholastic, 2001. 277 pages. (Fantasy Series / Humor)

Artemis Fowl is perhaps the greatest mind the world has ever seen. He is smart, clever, and is only twelve years old! His mind games and puzzles have stumped some of the world’s best physiologists and professors and sent them to their own wards. There is no doubt that Artemis Fowl is a child prodigy. But, he wastes his intellect on criminal mischief. He kidnapped Captain Holly Short of the LEP Recon unit and is holding the elf hostage until the fairy police pay him the ransom in gold. Now he has to deal with the fairy police trying murder him!

This story was very enjoyable. It started out with Artemis and his bodyguard and closet companion, Butler, sitting at a table in a cafĂ©. A man was meeting them there to tell them where they might find a real fairy. He found the man on the internet from his mansion in Ireland. He made the man lead him to old fairy sprite and made her a proposition. Her health for all of the information about the fairies. I would give this book four stars out of five. It builds up a lot of suspense by switching points of view throughout the characters. I don’t really find any flaws with the novel, but it dragged on suspenseful moments and made me think to myself, “Get on with it!”

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Kinney, Jeff. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. NY: Amulet Books, 2007. 217 pages. (Graphic Novel / Humor)

Greg and his friend Rowley are going through middle school. Greg is short for his age, so there are some difficulties along the way. Rowley is not very popular, but he is honest. It takes place in the town they live in. There are many problems Greg faces: not letting anybody know about his diary or the nickname Bubby, his little brother Manny give him. In Greg’s house, Manny is the perfect little angel while his brother Rodrick is in high school and has a heavy metal band. Greg faces many more problems along his journey though middle school. Read the book to find out how he survives his problems.

I would recommend this book because all of the events could happen to a student in middle school, like having a little brother that can get away with just about anything or having the perfect Halloween rout ruined by your mom and little brother. The whole novel is told in cartoons, so it is fun to read. Also, it is interesting to see what Greg is in trouble for and how his mom punishes him.

Twilight

Meyer, Stephanie. Twilight. New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2006. 481 pages. (Fantasy Series / Vampires)

The book I read was Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. The main characters in this book are Edward and Bella. The problems that they face are that Bella and Edward are in love but Edward is a vampire. They solve the problem by still loving each other even though Edward is not human. This story takes place in Forks, Washington. Another interesting occurrence that happened was when Bella found out that Edward was a vampire. My favorite part of the book was when Bella was walking by herself and four guys came up to her and were going to beat her up. Then, Edward pulled up in his car and saved her. That is when he told her that he was a vampire. If you like suspense, romance, and vampires, then you should definitely read this book.

Breaking Dawn

Meyer, Stephenie. Breaking Dawn NY: Little Brown, 2008. 754 pages. (Fantasy Series / Vampire)

Things have certainly taken a rather odd twist for Isabella (Bella) Swan since she moved to Forks to live with her father, Charlie. Ever since she fell in love with and married Edward Cullen, her life hasn’t been the same. Edward and his family-Alice, Jasper, Emmett, Rosalie, Carlisle, and Esme- are vampires, but they don’t drink human blood, only drink animal blood, for they want to behave like humans and live normally. And, if being in love with a vampire isn’t enough, her best friend, Jacob Black, is a werewolf. And vampires and werewolves are mortal enemies. Since the Cullens would like to live normally, Jacob and his pack made a treaty with the Cullens agreeing to live in peace with one another. Bella and Edward have been through a lot together, and it’s only going to get worse because Bella realizes she is pregnant. But, it is not a normal baby she carries, for it does not grow at a normal rate. This baby grows twice as fast. When the baby is being born, it is too strong for Bella to handle. She dies after giving birth. Edward is too stubborn to just let the love of his life die, so he bites her: she becomes a vampire, and is immortal. It works. But soon, Edward and Bella realize their daughter, Renesme, is half-human and half-vampire. This is no good for the Cullens and, now also a vampire, Bella. Now, the Volturi, the gods of the vampire world, are now coming to destroy the child. Will little Renesme survive? Or will the Cullens say goodbye to the world forever?

I am absolutely in love with this series! Breaking Dawn was definitely the best of them all! I like the fact that it is told from two different points of view. In the book, there are three parts to it. Part one is told from Bella’s point of view, part two from Jacob Black’s point, and part three shifts back to Bella again. If you like romance and fantasy books, you have GOT to read this one!
