Mercer, Paul. Sports Heroes & Legends “Babe Ruth.” NY: Barnes and Noble Publishing, Inc. 2003. 104 pages. (Non-Fiction / Bio)
My Book “Sports Heroes and Legends,” is about Babe Ruth, who is one of my hero’s about how he was. His full name was George Herman Ruth. His nicknames as he was growing up were Babe, Sultan of Swat, and Bambino. He was born on February 6, 1895. Into a poor family .He started to play baseball to support his family. As he played he loved the game and was really good at it. He was so good that he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and then the NY Yankees. What I found interesting is that Babe Ruth’s home run record stood for almost 40 years until Hank Aaron hit 755 homeruns, .41 more than Ruth. This story takes place in Baltimore where Ruth grew up, and then to New York and Boston, playing the game he loved.
I would recommend this book to a baseball fan and Babe Ruth, who was just an ordinary man that was great with kids, loved the game of baseball. As he was turning 53, Babe Ruth developed a tumor in his neck that was cancerous. They removed most of it, but it came back. Before he died, on April 27, 1947 it was declared Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium. He prepared a speech, but instead spoke from the heart to all the kids and the game of baseball. He then said, “If you love baseball like I did, you have to start when you are six or seven. You got to let it grow up with you, and if you try hard enough you’re bound to come out on top.” Baseball saved Babe Ruth growing up in the poor streets of Baltimore; it launched him to make a living, and gave him joy. Babe Ruth died August 16, 1948, but his inspiration to me and many more will live forever.
