Haddix, Margaret. Among the Barons. NY: Simon & Schuster, 2003 182 pages. (Sci-Fi Series)
Among the Barons takes place in the present. The main characters are Luke and Smits. Luke is thirteen years old, while Smits is ten years old. The problem is where they live you are only allowed two children per family, but Luke had been a third child. Because of this, Luke got a fake I.D. He is now known as Lee Grant. He now lives with Smits who is supposedly his “brother” who acts very snobbish and high class. Lee tries to solve this problem by taking it one day at a time and try to help every person that he comes along to with their problems, without getting caught by the government.
An interesting event that happened in the book is just when everything was going right, Lee’s and Smits’ parents mysteriously vanished and so now Lee and Smits are trying to live without their parents. I would tell you if and how they did this, but that would ruin the whole book.
I selected this book because I have different books by Margaret Haddix, and I loved them a lot, so I’m trying to complete her whole series. They’re located at the school library. You should definitely read her books.
