Speak

Anderson, Laurie H. Speak. NY: Penguin Putnam, 1999. 198 pages. (Fiction)

This story takes place at a summer party and at a high school called Meryweather. The main character, Melinda is a girl whose friends all loathe her because she called the cops on them while at a summer party. Her friend’s names are Ivy and Rachel. They are all at this summer party. At the same party there was also a guy named Andy Evans. During the party he got drunk and raped Melinda. Melinda was drunk too, but she knew when things got out of hand and called the cops. In September when they got back to school, no one would talk to Melinda; they would just laugh at her. Melinda’s mom and dad are almost always fighting too. Feeling alone, she finds an abandoned janitor’s closet in the school and makes a little room out of it. She starts to skip classes and cut school. Her grades are low, and she is almost always in the principal’s office or detention.

I really liked this book, and I would definitely read another book by this author because it was exciting and mysterious. I think that it was a really good book, so read it if you dare.
